Getting started
Do you need to sign up to try Shakefree?
No. Open shakefree.io, drop a clip and it is scanned without an account. You need an account only to buy a plan, or to get your own free minutes with your email.
How does Shakefree work?
Your browser reads the clip and tracks how the picture moves. Our server finds the shakes in that motion data. You review them on a timeline and export one file to your editor with the cuts already made.
Can you try it without your own footage?
Yes. The app has a demo clip you can scan and review. It never counts against your free minutes.
Do you have to keep the browser tab open while it scans?
Yes. The scan runs in your browser tab, so leave it open until the queue finishes. Settings, Notifications can tell you when a batch is done: on the desktop, as a push to your phone, or by email when you are signed in.
Can you install Shakefree as a desktop app?
Yes. In Chrome or Edge, use Settings, Desktop app, Install, or the install icon in the address bar. In Safari 17 or later on a Mac, use File, Add to Dock. Installed in Chrome or Edge, it can save exports to a folder you choose and open clips from Finder or Explorer.
Does Shakefree work on a phone or tablet?
Shakefree is made for a current desktop browser. Use a Mac or PC to scan and export.
How long does a scan take?
Most of the time goes into your browser reading the clip, so a faster computer scans faster. Formats that are converted first add 30 seconds to 2 minutes per clip. When the server is busy, the clip shows its place in line and starts by itself.
What Shakefree finds
What counts as a shake?
A stretch where the camera angle moves in many directions, erratically. A slow pan, a smooth glide or a steady handheld drift is not a shake. The camera shake page explains the difference.
Does Shakefree stabilize your video?
No. It finds the shaky parts and cuts them, in your editor or in a cleaned MP4. Stabilize what is left in your editor as usual.
Can you find more or fewer shakes?
Yes. Move the sensitivity under the timeline to make detection stricter or more forgiving. The detection settings also set the minimum shake length, the padding before and after a shake, and the stable gap that joins two close shakes. A change scans the clip again in seconds and is not charged again.
Can you use the same settings for every clip?
Yes. In a clip's detection settings, Apply to all uses them for the whole batch, and Save as default keeps them for new scans.
When is the detection less accurate?
When most of the frame is out of focus. With 90 percent or more of the shot in bokeh there is little detail to follow, and shakes can be missed.
Can you trust every cut?
Shakefree finds shakes automatically, so it can miss one or mark footage that looks fine to you. Play each shake on the timeline before you export, and keep a copy of a project before you save over it.
Video formats and browsers
Which video formats does Shakefree read?
MP4, MOV, ProRes and MXF, and most camera formats with H.264 or HEVC, including 10-bit and HDR, up to 8K. The app lists every format under Supported formats.
Can you scan Blackmagic RAW, R3D or other camera RAW?
Not yet. Blackmagic RAW, RED R3D, ARRIRAW, ProRes RAW, Canon Cinema RAW Light, Nikon N-RAW and CinemaDNG are not supported. Scan a proxy or an exported copy of the clip instead.
Why does your file say "converted first"?
Your browser has no decoder for that format, so the app makes a small copy on your computer before the scan. This takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes per clip, and works for files up to about 1.5 GB.
Which browser should you use?
Chrome or Edge on a Mac or PC. They read the most formats directly and can save to folders. Safari reads H.264 and HEVC. Firefox reads H.264, VP9 and AV1 but not HEVC. What a browser cannot read is converted first.
What if your file will not scan?
The app says why and names the codec. It also tells us the format, never the file, so we can add support. Send a problem report from the clip if you think the format should work.
Do you need an internet connection?
Yes. Detection runs on our server, so Shakefree needs a connection while it scans. If the connection drops, scans pause and carry on when it is back.
Privacy and your video
What do you keep after a scan?
We delete the motion data as soon as detection ends. We keep the result and a record of the scan, so a repeat scan is free and your minutes can be counted. Results are kept for 180 days after the clip was last scanned or exported. The privacy policy lists everything we receive and keep.
Are your project files uploaded?
No. Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro projects are read in your browser. When you search a folder for missing videos, only the file names are read, on your computer.
Why does your browser say "upload" when you pick a folder?
That is the browser's own wording for giving a page access to a folder. Shakefree reads only the file names to match your videos, and nothing is uploaded.
Where are your recent scans stored?
In your browser, on this computer. The last 20 scans are kept so a reload does not lose your work. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
Do we ever see your video?
Only if you send a problem report with Share the video file ticked. The box is ticked by default, and you can untick it before you press Send. A shared clip goes from your browser straight to our storage, is used only to reproduce the problem, and is deleted after 30 days, or sooner if you delete the report.
Exports and editors
Which editors can you export to?
Adobe Premiere Pro (FCP7 XML), DaVinci Resolve (Resolve XML, EDL and CSV markers) and Final Cut Pro (FCPXML). For any other editor, Shakefree can write a cleaned MP4 of the clip.
Can you export on the free plan?
No. Free shows where every shake is and how many there are. The exact in and out points and the export come with the 3-hour pack or the monthly plan.
Do you have to scan your clips again after you buy?
No. Clips you scanned before buying export straight away, with their exact in and out points. If a clip was scanned in another account, or its result has expired, the app asks you to scan it again.
What can the exported file hold?
Stable only (the shakes removed), shakes only, markers only (the full clip with a marker on every shake), or two tracks with the stable parts and the shakes side by side. Two tracks needs Resolve XML or FCPXML. You also choose whether to ripple before you export.
What is ripple?
Ripple closes the gap a cut leaves, so the rest of the timeline moves up. Turn it off to keep the gaps and every later clip where it was.
How do you open the export in your editor?
- Adobe Premiere Pro: File, Import.
- DaVinci Resolve: File, Import, Timeline.
- Final Cut Pro: File, Import, XML.
A new sequence or project opens with the cuts made.
Can you get a video file instead of a timeline?
Yes. Choose Cleaned video to render the clip with the shakes cut, or only the shakes, right in your browser, with the audio. The first render loads a 31 MB video encoder once, so it starts a little slower.
Where does the exported file go?
To your Downloads folder. In Chrome or Edge you can choose a projects folder in Settings, and exports are saved there instead.
Cleaning a whole project
Can Shakefree clean a project you are already cutting?
Yes. Export the sequence or timeline as XML, drop it on Shakefree with its videos, and import the cleaned copy back. Your edits, titles and music stay where they were, and only the shaky parts of the video clips are cut.
Which project files can you open?
Premiere Pro XML (File, Export, Final Cut Pro XML), Resolve FCP 7 XML or FCPXML, Final Cut Pro 7 XML, and Final Cut Pro FCPXML or .fcpxmld bundles, up to 50 MB. Native .prproj and .drp files, AAF and OpenTimelineIO are not supported.
Shakefree cannot find some of your videos. What do you do?
Shakefree matches clips to videos by file name, so drop the missing videos or use Find media in a folder. It checks the length too, so a different video with the same name is not linked. The panel shows where the media was when the project was exported.
What does Shakefree leave uncut in a project?
Titles, generators, stills, image sequences, audio-only files, and clips with speed changes. Clips inside compound, multicam or connected clips are left alone too, and in Final Cut Pro only the primary storyline is cut. The panel lists everything it left as it was.
Does Shakefree overwrite your project?
No. It saves a copy with "-shakefree" in its name. In Chrome and Edge you can save over the original, and the app asks first. Keep a backup either way.
Are you charged for the whole video or only the part in your project?
For the whole video. Each video a project uses is scanned in full and charged by its full length, once, however many times the project uses it. A video you already scanned is not charged again.
Plans and billing
What are the free limits?
Free scans up to a set number of minutes of video in any 24 hours per browser, and clips up to a set length. Browsers without an account on the same network share a limit. The app always shows what you have left.
Out of free minutes? Can you get more without paying?
Enter your email and we send a sign-in link. Your free account gets its own a set number of minutes every 24 hours. The app also shows when your free minutes come back.
What happens with a free clip longer than the free clip length?
Shakefree still scans it and tells you how many shakes it found, without where they are. Buy the 3-hour pack or the monthly plan and the clip unlocks without being read again.
How long can a clip be on a paid plan?
The app tells you before a scan if a clip is longer than your plan allows. Split longer footage into parts and scan each one.
On the 3-hour pack and the monthly plan a clip can be up to the plan's limit long. Split longer footage into parts and scan each one.
On the 3-hour pack and the monthly plan there is no length limit per clip.
Every plan also has a cap of a set number of frames per clip, so footage shot at a high frame rate can be shorter.
How are pack minutes counted?
Minutes come off the pack when a clip is scanned, by its full length rounded up to the whole second. Scanning the same clip again, with other settings, is free. Packs you buy add up, and the hours never expire. Pricing has more on the two plans.
Do your free minutes add to the pack?
No. While the pack has hours left, every scan uses the pack and the free minutes are left unused. A clip you scanned for free before buying uses pack time the first time you export it. When the pack runs out, the account is back on the free plan with its own free minutes.
What does fair use on the monthly plan mean?
Up to 100 hours of video a month is always fine. Above that we may warn you and then slow scanning down until your plan renews. We never stop it.
How can you pay?
By card through Stripe, inside the app. Stripe may offer other payment methods where they are available. We never see your full card number.
Where do you enter a promo or referral code?
In the Promo or referral code field under the plan cards in the app, before you pay. A referral link fills it in for you. An hours code adds free hours to your account without a payment.
Do prices include tax?
Prices are in US dollars. Where sales tax or VAT applies, the checkout shows it before you pay.
Can you get a refund?
If you have not used a 3-hour pack, ask for a refund within 14 days of buying it. Refunds after that, or for a used pack or a monthly period, are at our discretion. Ask on the support page. The terms have the details.
What happens if your monthly payment fails?
Stripe retries the card, and export may pause until the payment goes through. Update the card in Settings, Plan & billing, Manage billing.
Bought Shakefree for Premiere for life? Do you get the web app?
Yes. Lifetime owners of the Premiere plugin are grandfathered in: Shakefree Unlimited is free for life, with no card and no renewal. We email you a sign-in link. If it did not arrive, write to us from the email you bought with.
The pack upgrade offer
First month of unlimited free
What is the pack upgrade offer?
When your 3-hour pack is down to its last 20 minutes, you can turn it into Shakefree Unlimited with the first month free. Your pack already paid for that month, so nothing is charged when you upgrade.
When can you take the offer?
From the moment your pack has 20 minutes or less left until it runs out. A Special offer badge shows in the top right of the app, and Settings, Plan & billing shows the offer too. If you scanned recently, we also email you when it opens.
What happens to the minutes left on your pack?
They go into the upgrade. Once unlimited starts, your pack reads 0 minutes. With unlimited you no longer need them.
What do you pay, and when?
Nothing when you upgrade. Unlimited costs the monthly price, $15 a month, from the end of the free month. The payment step and your receipt show the date of the first charge.
Do you need a card?
Yes, for the months after the free one. With a saved card the free month starts in one click. A new card is saved by Stripe and not charged.
Can you cancel?
Yes, any time, in Settings under Manage billing. Cancel before the free month ends and you pay nothing more. Unlimited keeps working until the end of the free month.
What if your pack runs out before you upgrade?
The offer ends with the pack. You can still buy another 3-hour pack, or unlimited at the full price from the first month. A new pack opens the offer again in its last 20 minutes.
Which packs qualify?
A 3-hour pack you bought. Free hours from a promo code do not open the offer. Each pack you buy can be upgraded once.
Account and sign-in
How do you sign in?
With a link we email you, with Google, or with a password if you set one in Settings, Security. There is nothing to remember unless you want a password.
When is your account created?
When you buy a plan, or when you unlock free minutes with your email. You never need one just to scan.
Can you use your plan on several computers?
Yes. Sign in with the same email on each computer. Your recent scans stay in the browser that made them, so open the video again on the other computer to work on it there. One account is for one person.
The sign-in email did not arrive.
Check your spam folder and wait a minute. You can ask for a few links in a short time, after that the app asks you to wait. Or sign in with Google if the address is a Google account.
Can you get a copy of your data?
Yes. Settings, Security, Download your data gives you a file with your profile, purchases, scans, emails, reports and messages.
How do you delete your account?
Settings, Security, Delete your account, confirmed with your email. It cancels a running subscription at once without a refund, and unused pack time is lost. Write to us first if you have pack hours left.
How do you stop offer emails?
Use the unsubscribe link in any offer, or switch offers off in Settings. Sign-in links and receipts still arrive.
Troubleshooting and support
A clip failed to scan. What now?
Press Report next to the clip in the queue. It sends us the debug log and the clip's facts, and you can share the video so we can reproduce the problem. You get a report id to quote if you also write to us.
Why does your clip say "Server busy"?
Many scans are running at once. Your clip keeps its place in line and starts by itself. Leave the tab open.
The app says it is offline or down for maintenance.
Your clips are safe. Scans pause, they are not lost, and the app tries again by itself, or press Try now.
The app says free scanning is paused on your account.
Free use is limited per browser, account and network to stop abuse. If you think this is a mistake, write to us. A paid plan still scans.
The app asks you to reload for a newer version.
Reload when it suits you. Shakefree keeps your open clips and project through the reload.
How do you reach a person?
Use the form on the support page or write to [email protected]. Include the Ref from the error, your browser and the clip's format.
See pricing for both plans, and the terms of service for refunds and cancellation.
